Free preschool won’t do anything for ‘academic standards’

Child psychologist Clare Rowe says the NSW and Victorian governments’ announcement of free preschool for four-year-olds in households with an annual income of under $500,000 “will not do anything for our academic standards”.

“If we’re going to invest billions of dollars, can we please look at out curriculum for our primary school students, that is filled with nonsense, get back to evidence-based learning,” she told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

“I don’t think we can take the argument that this will increase our academic standards and results.

“Conversely, is the aim here to relieve financial pressures on families and to encourage parents to return to the workforce?

“If that is the aim, then this could be a very helpful initiative.”Read MoreThe Australian
