Plumes of forest fire smoke blew eastward across New Jersey as authorities worked to contain a massive blaze in the state’s Pine Barrens area on Tuesday, June 21. Imagery captured by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s GOES East satellite on Monday shows smoke from the fire, which broke out on Sunday afternoon in the Wharton State Forest. By Tuesday morning, the fire burned 13,500 acres (21 square miles) and was 85 percent contained, according to New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
